Audition FAQs Audition FAQsWe're so thrilled you're considering auditioning at Shekinah Productions Community Theatre. We hope this information will answer any questions you might have, and help make your audition a success!What should I bring to the audition?You will want to bring your music (if you're auditioning for a musical), appropriate footwear, and a water-bottle. Your calendar is helpful, too, because you will need to list any and all conflicts between auditions and the shows closing. For plays, you will not need to have music prepared.What should I wear?Wear clothes that are comfortable, and in which you look presentable. We will occasionally do a dance/movement call at the audition, so make sure you can move freely. If you have jazz shoes, bring them. However, there is no need to purchase dance shoes just for an audition. Please do not dress like a character from the show. Again, it limits how the directors see you.What kind of song should I sing?For most musicals, its best to sing a musical theatre song in the style of the show. For example, if you're auditioning for The King & I, something by Rogers & Hammerstein would be appropriate. If the show were Chicago, you'd probably want to sing something that is more of a jazz or big band style.Should I sing a song from the show for which I'm auditioning?No. Doing so causes the director to envision you only as that character, which can hurt your chances of being cast. You might actually be more suited for another part. For shows with a unique style of music, the director may want to hear people sing from the show. If that's the case, it will be posted on the website.Can I audition for a specific role only?Yes and no. Our first round of auditions are general auditions. That means directors will not ask you to read or sing from the production until callbacks (unless it's a play). However, on your audition form there's a space to check if youll only accept certain roles. Please note, though, just because you select a certain role, you will not necessarily be asked to read for it.How should I bring my music?The best way to bring your music is in a binder. Books tend to close while the accompanist plays, and taped or loose sheets can fall off the music stand. Also, please make sure you clearly mark where you want to begin and end your selection on the sheet music.What do I do when they call my name?Usually, we will have a small line form near the accompanist. When the person before you has finished, give your music to the accompanist and indicate on the music where you'd like to start and stop. It also helps to let him or her know at what tempo youll sing. Finally, step confidently to the audition area, and say your name and song title.How long should my audition song last?Auditions should not exceed one minute.How long does is the audition process?It's hard to say. At the initial auditions, you are usually dismissed after you sing. So, you could be there anywhere from 20 minutes to a few hours. Callback times will vary from show to show.What is a callback?A callback is the second round of auditions in which the creative team has people dance, sing, and read from the show. After they have seen what they need at callbacks, they will develop the cast list.When and where are callback and cast lists posted?The callback list is posted an hour after audtions, and callbacks are held that afternoon (If call backs are necessary). The cast list is posted by noon the following day. Both lists are posted on the SPCT website, the Music Arts Director's door, and on the SPCT Facebook page.If my name is not on the callback list, does that mean I wasn't cast?Not necessarily. Please check the cast list regardless of whether or not you received a callback.What do I do if I am not cast?Accept it gracefully, and consider it a learning experience. In the performance world, people hear "no" more frequently than they hear "yes". Just keep auditioning.

Shekinah Productions Community Theatre is interested in inspiring and encouraging growth in our community and we depend on our volunteers to assist in this noble task! There are as many opportunities to volunteer and interest areas, as there are people!

Set Construction

Stage Construction

If you would like to volunteer for stage construction, we need people who can paint (basic), faux painting, mural painting, hot glueing, hammering, stapeling, sawing, caulking. As you can see there are many ways to get involved no matter the skill level. Come and join our stage designer make the sets come alive.

Light Crew

If you would like to volunteer with the light crew, we need people who can create a light scheme for the production. The light crew takes care of the house lights, stage lights, spot lighting, specialty lighting and lighting backstage. The lighting crew works with the lead director to create a lighting concept that will make the show breathe life.

Sound Crew

If you would like to volunteer for the sound crew, you will work closely with our sound director. We need people who can help out with set up and tear down. We also need people to help out with CD Trax and help with the actors backstage with their microphones. If you are interested in helping our sound director in any way, just let us know.

Props

If you would like to volunteer for props, we need people who can paint (basic), faux painting, hot glueing, hammering, stapeling, sawing, caulking. As you can see there are many ways to get involved no matter the skill level. Come and join our stage designer make the sets come alive.

Media Crew

If you would like to volunteer for media crew, we need people who can run the computer and projectors (training is a must). So, no matter the computer skills, you can be a part of this team. Come and join our medaia crew to add that special flair to the programs.

Hair-Makeup

Hair & Makeup

Do you like to make people pretty? Okay, well sometimes we need people to look not so pretty too. If you enjoy working with hair and make up, this is the perfect job for you. We need several people to help out in this area to get everyone ready before the show. If you want to be a part of this group give us a shout out.

Costumes

If you would like to volunteer for costumes, we need people who can sew, do alterations, and shop (yes I said shop). As you can see there are many ways to get involved no matter the skill level. Come and join our stage designer make the sets come alive.

Ushering

Ticket Sales & Ushering

Ticket sales and ushering are the first people everyone sees. So, we need friendly happy faces ready to help out in any way they can. We need at least a couple of people at the ticket booth to sell tickets. We use a computer system to use credit cards (little bit of training needed) and someone to take cash and checks. We also need ushers at the doors to take ticket and usher them to their seating area. It is always fun to dress up and really have a good time with everyone who comes through the doors.

Office Work

Office & Administration

Office work is an essential part of this program. We need people to copy, fold, print and collate. People to anwser phones and organize. So if you like order and lots of paper, sign up to help out in the office.

James Boone

James is the Music Arts Director here at St. Marks United Methodist Church and has been here since July 2007. He hit the ground running with the Music and Arts Department and has been blessed by the dedication and talent of the church and community. He has already done seventeen major productions here at St. Marks from classical, Vivaldis Gloria, to the very contemporary CD Release Concert, Let The Praises Ring, and now one of his favorite musicals, Xanadu.James grew up in Odessa, Texas and it was in high school he truly felt his passion for music and drama. Throughout junior high, high school, college and adulthood, James has been involved in several different singing ensembles, orchestras, bands and productions. James began directing in college with the singing ensemble, Chosen, which toured the Midwest at different churches. James began his ministry in 1994 at First Christian Church in Joplin, Missouri. He then moved across town in 1995 to South Joplin Christian Church. Both of those ministries were part time and prepared him for his first full time ministry in Lovington, New Mexico, where he was the Youth and Music Director. It was there he had his first taste of directing a Broadway musical, The Wiz. James was also in a mainstream Christian band Unleavened. They performed at several local establishments and would lead worship for camps and conferences in the New Mexico Annual Conference. James has truly felt he was called to be here at St. Marks. Four years ago Shekinah Productions was born here at St. Marks and performed Fiddler on the Roof as their inaugural production. We were excited about this production and how it drew in so many different churches together for one common reason; Performance With A Purpose. Over the past four years it has been a pleasure working with our community and see the passion they not only have for the arts, but the compassion and love they share for one another. We are here to build community and to live in Gods Shekinah (presence)!

Lead Director

Leah Leah Ammerman was born and raised in Indianapolis, IN, in 1956 in a Methodist/Presbyterian/Catholic family. Her daughters Automne and Morgana were also born in Indy. And they are the great loves of her life. Since meeting her husband Scott (the next biggest love), in Houston, TX they have lived back in Indy, Tucson AZ, St. Louis Mo, Deland Fl and now, Satellite Beach FL. Leah and Scott have now been married for 28 years now and going strong! Once just another person out in the workforce, she has been blessed to be able to only be a housewife and mother now since 1993. Thank You God and thank you Scott. Her passions have always been family, friends, sewing and readinglots and lots of reading!! And since joining the St. Marks family, after her grandson Sebastian started at the preschool, she has been doing lots and lots of sewing. She has helped to make the costumes for the variousproductions that the Music Dept. at St. Marks has done in the last few years. She has volunteered in the preschool, considers it a joy to serve Communion when given the chance, and loves to play its not work in the pumpkin patch. And, the friends that have been made possible by becoming a part of the St. Marks family have brightened her life in many, many ways Got to love those friends! Re-learning how to make things from scratch has once again taught her that perfection is unattainablebut, With Gods help many more things are possible than ever before!Although she is usually very laid back.. and sometimes downright lazy, her faith has always been strong and the tribulations have been many. Thank goodness God has been there each and every time to help show her the way.She has been VERY blessed in most of the trialsothers have not always seen it that waybut wow, do I know better! Again, Thank You God! Awesome job! Now, back to the sewingThe Show Must Go On!

Jackie Heller is going into her junior year at West Shore Jr. /Sr. High school. She is honored to be choreographing and participating in such a humorous musical. She has been involved in theater since she was four and her most recent roles have been Jemima in Cats, Cinderella in Cinderella, a lovely lady in Les Mis the Concert, and the Rose Seller in Oliver. She spends most of her time at dance lessons, participating in chorus at her school and hanging out with her friends. She would like to thank James and Nancy for being such great directors and helping her so much, and her parents for their love and support in helping with the show. She would also like to thank the amazing cast and crew for working so hard and making the show enjoyable and hilarious!

Kevin

When Kevin Kornicki is not operating the soundboard at St. Mark's he'’s on tour with his theater performance troupe, Squonk Opera. Kevin is the assistant music director of the group responsible for the musical composition, production and venue sound design. In addition to this role, Kevin is an accomplished world percussionist for the group. He plays drum kit, Zen drum, African djembe and HandSonic. He has pounded out rhythms on the Broadway stage, meeting the standards of New York Time's critics and audiences alike. He has also performed off-Broadway and tours nationally and internationally. Originally from Philadelphia, Kevin is a graduate of the Philadelphia Settlement School of Music. He owns and operates a full production music studio in Satellite Beach, Florida where he composes custom music and produces a variety of audio products/services. For relaxation, Kevin enjoys collaborating with “Soledad,” a Spanish guitar group and can be seen playing the Cajon and Congas with them throughout local venues. Nancy Nancy Matican Bock, Drama Director: is a New Yorker relocated to Melbourne Beach after surviving 9/11 firsthand. She owns a personal training business, and has her BA in Communications with a dual minor in Theatre Arts and Physical Education/Coaching from Michigan State University. Nancy has always been a lover of the arts. Nancys experiences include choreographing, writing and directing for her sorority; and appearing as a TV spokesperson for several sporting goods companies throughout her career. Most recently she has appeared in a commercial for Bagel-Joes, a Brevard County favorite. Nancy came back to the theatre to introduce all of its the joys to her 6 year old daughter. Nancy portrayed Babette in the Shekinah production of Beauty and the Beast in 2009 and the Stepmother in Cinderella, 2010 as well as directed the adaptation of Princess Bride. In addition to performing, Nancy is the monthly fitness and lifestyle columnist for Charm on the Space Coast/Treasure Coast Magazine ; and for Sunshinemamas.com. I would like to thank James Boone and the entire Shekinah community for the opportunity to be part of something so amazing. The talent and the personalities are so extraordinary; that I feel blessed having them in my life. In addition, I especially want to thank my husband, Chip whose constant support and compassion gives me inspiration every day. Kathy and her husband, Tom, joined St. Mark's Methodist Church family, along with their daughter Anna and son Paden in 2008. Originally from Georgia, Kathy and her family make Indian Harbour Beach their new home.A graduate of the University of Georgia majoring in Art, Kathy has generously given of her time and talents to our productions. Cinderella, our May 2010 production was the first Kathy worked on the set design and was also anextra in the production. Kathy's contribution as set designer for, The Princess Bride, was significant. This current production of Xanadu has been a lot of fun! She has also had the awesome talents of her husband Tom Vill for constructing the phone booth and the fantastic help of Kathi Heller who pitched in with her wonderful talents and glue gun.

Women claim New Beginnings through church ministry

You never know when a new beginning is about to start.It happened to Mildred Childress in 2006. She was one of about a dozen people in a Bible study class at St. Marks United Methodist Church in Indialantic. They were studying the Old Testament story about Nehemiah, who had been separated from his homeland.That lesson about a person in exile did its work on the group. When the series of classes ended, they decided to open a transitional home to help women recently released from correctional institutions. They named the faith-based program New Beginnings Ministry.We took in our first resident on June 27, 2007, she said. Ninety women have gone through the program. Weve struck out on a lot of them, but the ones who have really stuck with us really wanted to change. (They have) pulled their lives together and made something of themselves.Now, New Beginnings Ministry is holding its first big fundraiser, A Night to Remember.Directed by James Boone, the churchs music and fine arts director, it will feature area vocalists and instrumentalists in a revue of Broadway songs.Well be doing works from Sound of Music, Phantom of hte Opera and also some from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Boone said. Some of the performers include Nancy Matican Bock, Jackie Heller, Savannah Carnrite, Angelyn Cater, Robert and Emily Clark.Although the event came together quickly, Boone said the performers, who come from churchs Shekinah production company, all wanted to help.The second I sent out an email, I got immediate responses, Boone said. There was a need, and we wanted to help. Thats what community does for each other. We help each other out. We want to make sure this ministry is successful because it touches the ladies lives.The show will last about two hours. It includes an intermission during which women living at the transitional home will serve refreshments.The transitional home has room for eight women. A house manager who graduated from the New Beginnings program lives there full time.She has a full-time job, Childress said. She knows how to be tough, how to be tender. She has found the Lord, and her life has turned around completely.Childress said the house manager had been in prison for everything you can imagine.Now, she said, the woman has a beautiful personality.She calls me Mom, she said. Her own mother is deceased, and I love her like a daughter. XANADU, CAN DO!! A MUST SEE PERFORMANCE IN INDIALANTIC!

Are you looking for a fun family activity this weekend? Xanadu at St. Marks Church is the show to see! Madilynne and I set out in our black and white dresses, white sunglasses, silver necklaces and our black purses for a girls night out. Not knowing what the evening had in store for us added to the excitement.We arrived shortly before showtime and were greeted by a lovely lady dressed in leg warmers, roller skates and pixies. We knew at this point we were in for a real treat! We found our seats giggling with excitement (in the back of course because we had smuggled in granola bars and juice boxes for treats) and got ready for some rockin 80s fun.For those of you dont know, the original Xanadu was a 1980 romantic musical fantasy film starring Olivia Newton-John, which has been redone in a modern spoof, and now become an award winning Broadway hit.Thanks to Sunshine Mamas one and only Nancy Matican-Bock, St. Marks Church and an amazing cast, Xandu- The Surprise Broadway Hit, has been brought to St. Marks Church, complete with 80s musical hits such as Im Alive and my personal favorite, Evil Woman .The story features a Greek Muse, Kira, who travels from Mt. Olympus to help a struggling artist, Sonny, in Venice Beach, CA. Sonny has a dream of starting the first ever Roller Disco. Thanks to the jealous antics of her sisters, Kira falls in a forbidden love with Sonny making for a crazy, hilarious performance with singing, dancing, roller skating and all around best darn entertainment Ive experienced!This is a tale of love, determination and adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seatheck Madilynne couldnt even sit down, she was standing on my lap the majority of the 90 minute show! She is now determined to sing and dance like Ms. Nancy!Please support our local community, Mamas! Take your family to enjoy Xanadu in Indialantic, FL! You can thank me later. St. Mark's United Methodist Church drama group rolls out 'Xanadu' in Indialantic

This weekend, St. Mark's United Methodist Church turns into a roller rink of sorts for the musical "Xanadu."Presented by Shekinah, the church's Community Drama Group, the production required the first six rows of pews across the sanctuary to be taken out and replaced with a portable roller rink.It also meant taking the 20 performers, ages 6 to 45, back to 1980, when bright leg warmers and headbands were all the rage."It's a very comical, very entertaining, very fast-paced musical," said its director, James Boone, the church's music and arts director. "It's a very enjoyable program. We're having a great time just putting it on. So we know people will really enjoy it."Nearly everyone in the cast gets on old-style roller skates, Boone said. Most of the performers already skated well, he said.But first, they had to build a performing/skating stage. So Boone and his production team removed the pews and added risers behind the altar to create a theater in the round. Masonite was laid and they were ready to go.He said church leaders "were OK with that" because it was a good way to follow the program's mission of community outreach and involvement."We've been doing big productions for four years now," he said. "They've gotten used to my weird requests. We've put in scaffolding for a tower in 'Beauty and the Beast.' "The musical "Xanadu" is based on the 1980 movie starring Olivia Newton-John, Michael Beck and Gene Kelly.Set in Los Angeles and Mt. Olympus, "Xanadu" tells the story of Kira, a muse who comes to Earth to help Sonny, a man who dreams of becoming a great artist. St. Mark's production of 'Xanadu' brings the 1980s back to Indialantic

The 1980s are coming back Friday through Sunday with a production of "Xanadu" at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 2030 SR A1A, Indialantic.The production, by St. Mark's Community Drama Group called Shekinah, is led by director James Boone, who also appears as a cast member, and drama director Nancy Matican-Bock.The drama group is sponsored by the church but doesn't require church membership to participate, Boone said. Similarly, the play is open to the entire community, not just church members, he said."This is our fourth Broadway show over the past four years. Mainly, it is for us to express ourselves artistically but the friendships we build during each production are just great. We do it for community outreach and the $10 ticket cost is just to pay for our expenses," he said.There are 17 cast members in the show, with choreography by Jackie Heller, 16, who is considering a career in the arts when she goes to college. Bring back phone booths for Superman

In preparation for the opening this weekend of "Xanadu," St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Indialantic has gone all out building sets.Several pews have been removed from the front of the sanctuary to make room for a mini-roller rink. And they've constructed a phone booth.You remember those, right? Little glass enclosures we used to lock ourselves into to make a phone call, muffling the sounds of a busy street?Well, it seems the kids in the cast were perplexed."Why would you stand in a box to make phone calls?" one of the youngsters asked Indialantic resident Jackie Heller, who is helping with the production. "My mom does it from the car."Phone booths, and pay phones in general, are disappearing, rendered technological dinosaurs by the multipurpose devices we lug around in our purses. And the privacy once afforded by a booth built for one (or two if those two were really friendly) seems irrelevant in a society that values over-sharing.We've all had the misfortune of being within a 10-foot radius of people who take great pleasure in shouting into their cell phones the graphic details of their marital issues, legal woes or that morning's bowel movement.Here's the question, though. In a society with no phone booths, where will Superman change clothes?I posed the question to a few friends last week, and their answers didn't offer me much hope for the future of superherodom.The best anyone could come up with was a public bathroom. Like Superman is some sort of Fonz of Steel."He'll change on the Internet," said one 20-something friend, which made me question her grasp of reality. I mean, she does know that, despite the "communities" built on Facebook, Twitter and various dating sites, the Internet isn't really a place, right?"An app. He'll download an app for his cell phone," someone else said.Which may be Superman's best bet yet. Heck, I'd invest in an app that would, upon command, transform me from geeky journalist to invincible superhero, especially if it came with a cool cape.I guess he could change in his car, at the gym or under a manhole cover. He could duck into Starbucks or McDonald's or Walgreens. There seem to be a lot of those around.Maybe the best thing for Superman would be to bring back phone booths.
